Accountability Mechanism Extends Mediation Deadline in Cameroon Case

Orsolya Székely, the Accountability Mechanism Secretary, has granted the Parties involved in a Cameroon dispute resolution case an additional six months. All Parties involved in the case requested more time to resolve their differences.

The case involves the Cameroon Nachtigal Hydropower Project and the Hydropower Development on the Sanaga River Technical Assistance Project, World Bank-financed projects that include the construction of a run-of-river hydropower plant and technical assistance to improve the Government of Cameroon’s institutional capacity for sustainable development of hydroelectric resources on the Sanaga River Basin. The Accountability Mechanism’s Dispute Resolution Service is facilitating the process in cooperation with the Compliance Advisor Ombudsman of the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, and the Independent Recourse Mechanism of the African Development Bank, two other independent accountability mechanisms that also received eligible complaints related to the Nachtigal Hydropower Project.

The Accountability Mechanism’s operating procedures allow for a one-year period for all parties to reach a resolution, with a six-month extension period possible. Szekely informed the World Bank Board of Executive Directors of the extension.
